They have laptops now with the full keyboard. Typing on these is pretty much the same as having a regular keyboard.
Personally, I would go for a laptop. It is very convient to be able to take your computer with you wherever you go. Say you have some tests coming up, you can take your laptop to the library to study. All the information from working at home will be with you. I had a desktop in college and it became a pain trying to remember to email myself all the stuff I had been working on.
An issue with the laptops is security. I had friends in school who had their laptops jacked from them. They had left it lying around for a moment and next thing it was gone. One of them actually forgot he had it with him and left it in class. He got lucky and had it returned, but you should keep on your guard.
All in all though I would definitely go with a laptop. The convenience of having everything with you whenever you want can't be beat.

I have a laptop with an external keyboard and mouse. It feels and works just like a desktop.
It might be best to wait until you see what the college will require. Some colleges require you to have a specific laptop and sell it to you really cheap. Check with your college first, but look around for good prices.
HP is best and has great chat support after the warranty, but Toshiba is considered the best value. You don't need to get the most expensive unless you really need all the bells and whistles.
I have found the best prices at Best Buy, but if you can find the same computer at two different stores most will match the price and give you 10% of the difference.

I own both and tend to use my laptop more. If you really hate the keyboard/touch pad you can always buy a wireless keyboard and mouse which you can use while at home. This way you get the best of both worlds.
The real downside to laptops is that they are harder to upgrade and expand (and costly to repair - get the warranty). So if you're gonna get a laptop be sure to buy a good one so that it will last a few years. They're more expensive then a desktop due to their smaller size, and dollar for dollar the desktops have more computing power but the portability is priceless.

You can get laptops with good keyboards. You can also get accessory keyboards that plug into the USB port.
Desktops, dollar for dollar, are more powerful but obviously less portable.
If you'll be able to use your laptop in class and at study meetings, etc., a laptop is probably worth the sacrifice for you. If you won't, a desktop will give you more for your money.

If mobility is the greater consideration, get a laptop. Just attach an external keyboard (preferably on a tray) to the laptop when not on the go. Then prop it up a bit on phone books. This should prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (wrist pain) and neck pain (from always looking down towards screen.

Take it from a college student, the laptop is the way to go. Several professors will even ask you to bring your computer to class, assuming every student has a laptop. Most schools are also wireless, so it's easy to connect to the internet anywhere you go, from the dorm to the library, to the cafeteria. Laptops allow you to carry your information with you whereever you go, so it's a great investment.

Well, if you want a good gaming computer, and have a fairly big budget, take a look at the Dell Alienware Laptops. They are supposed to be really good. If you have a lower budget, take a look at the dell xps. Also take a look at the Vaio F series and Z series laptops. I myself have a 13" Macbook pro, but then, each to his own I guess. Hope I helped.
