Let me think here, they are tied in points.
Ovechkin has more goals
Thornton has more assists, better ppoints/game, better plus-minus, more power-play points, better scoring percentage, all in less ice time.
I'm taking Thornton as being far superior.
Let me amend my answer
Put either player on the Detroit Red Wings or the Ottawa Senators, and I'm positive the gap between Thornton and Ovechkin will grow larger than it is today.

There is no doubt that Ovechkin is a better goal scorer, however Thornton is better at just about everything else. He is a mountain that you can form an entire team around, which is exactly what happened to the Sharks in 06. If you could get those 2 on the same line, ohhhhhh maaan.

I agree w/ Snoop....Ovechkin is the better goal scorer while Thornton is a better playmaker and better defensively. They are both great but I would take Thornton over Ovechkin right now based on the fact that Thornton makes the players around him better, Ovechkin does not yet. However, if you were building a team I would rather have Ovechkin. He is younger and his potential is limitless.

I agree with most here... if I was building a team, I'd go with Ovechkin... but for a single game played tomorrow... Joe Thornton is the better player.

Ovechkin has more potential. If he had a few better players around him or had a better coach than Hanlon the past couple of years...(I'd love to see how Hitchcock would develop Ovie's defensive game)...then things might look different. At this point, I'd have to go with Thornton though.

Ovechkin. Thornton is a tremendous player, but Ovechkin is a young kid with his love for hockey intact (not that Thornton's isn't it's just more evident in Ovie) and is dripping with raw talent.

Ovechkin for sure! First of all, cuz he's the reason why the Capitals win sometimes, cuz honestly, they don't have any other good players. Also, he's one of the best player in the league, he makes lots of goals (or points) and nice play, he's always ready to jump on the ice, he's fantastic to see live (you just have to go see him live) and just cuz I love him!
Thornton is also a good player, but I don't think he's as good as Ovechkin!

Ovechkin he is getting better each year. Thornton has pretty much maxed out his potential. If i was a Gm building for the future I'd go with Alexander
