There are several things you can do to increase the "speed" of your computer.
1) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.
2) Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start > Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.
3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, Spybot - Search and Destroy spyware remover and Ad-aware spyware remover. These programs are all free.
4) Clean up the registry. CCleaner, available at http://www.ccleaner.com is free and worth running. It will also remove unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
You also didn't mention which Virus protection you have. I would advise against using Norton as it is a HUGH resource hog. Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best and are very light on your system.

How far are you willing to go?? Be careful what you do though.
1. Delete unnecessary files, C:\windows\temp, c:\windows\*ntuninstall*, %userprofile%\temp
2. Remove event sounds
3. Disable system restore(not really recommended for home users)
4. Disable startups
5. Defragment
6. Disable themes
7. Disable delay(Display settings -> apperance ->effects)
8. Disable unnecessary services(alerter, clipbook, dns client, messenger, remote registry, ssdp, telnet, themes, terminal services, webclient, wireless zero config). Do not disable telephony though.
9. Registry settings(too many to list), do a search
10. Local host file to block ads(see http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/)
11. Delete local accounts like HelpAssistant and SUPPORT_##### and disable Guest
12. Uninstall unwanted programs
Probably more that I missed, I use a script to do it all so just one click for me :)

Well, one way would be to download ccleaner, I use it like, twice a day and when I do my ocmputer runs alot faster, it deletes tons of useless files (don't worry, nothing important).
Download it at http://www.ccleaner.com/
Another way is to go to http://www.optimizingpc.com/optimize/deletefiles.html
It gives a list of ways that can help you save space on your computer to make it run alot faster and smoother.
http://forums.techguy.org/t212167.html is a great tutorial that helps save space and speed, it takes a bit of time to go through, but it saved me 200mb of space.
The last one is http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=69
It's like ccleaner but gets some things ccleaner doesn't saved me about 150mp on my first try.
Hope those help you.

I just manage my startups and disable unnecessary ones then overclock my builds usually at default Vcore.
In case you are interested:

However if you have less than 1Gb RAM, you may have to spend for RAM. RAM is so cheap this days.

i'm assuming you're utilising homestead windows. attempt CCleaner (get rid of unneeded data), advert-conscious (get rid of undercover agent ware, and so forth.), be effective to defragment your computing device as nicely (initiate Menu --> All courses -->upload-ons --> equipment kit --> Disk Defragmenter). you additionally can disable the seen recommendations (best click My computing device --> stepped forward --> overall performance) and disable the seen effects that makes homestead windows seem exceedingly. only google the courses i discussed and you may get carry of them. they're all unfastened. you may observe an incredible advance in speed.
