Why is she buying a computer, if she waits till after Xmas day she will save even more. She should not pay cash, She needs to pay with a frequent flyer credit card. Then she gets miles as well. Does it matter is she is a costomer? I think costomers don't get discounts only Customers do. 2009 is also to much for a new computer, Why does it have to be new, she could buy a used computer for .50 cents on the dollar.

Start by writing a formula for the problem.

Let x be the original price. Then

x - x * .02 = 2009 (This means you subtract 2% of the original price from the original price to get 2009)

So then

x * (1 - 1 * .02) = 2009 (Here we are pulling out the x's)

Then

x * .98 = 2009 (Clearly 1 - 1 * .02 is .98)

So

(x * .98) / .98 = 2009 / .98 (We are dividing both sides by .98 to get x alone on one side)

Then

x = 2050.

Since the question isn't asking for the original price, but the discount, we still need to subtract the price paid from the discount to get:

2050 - 2009 = 41.

There's your answer.

First multiply 2009 by 2%. You'd get 40.18. Subract that from 2009, and you'd get 1968.82. The amount of the discount is 40.18. Good Luck!

Or it must have been 2009 + 40.18.. That's why she paid $2009.

$2050.

($2050 - 2% is $2009)

(Take $2009 and divide by .98) (.98 is 100-.02)
