hahaha, people think marijuana prohibition "works"...where there is demand there will be supply ALWAYS. The government makes way too much money off of tobacco to do that with the plethera of taxes...pluss then once a user gets cancer they have to pay for healthcare right? (and probably end up with a marijuana prescription)

The reason why is very fundamental to the American way of life. A simple answer is that the federal government can't tax something that they can't control. Marijuana grows just about anywhere (hense the name weed). Unlike tobacco which only grows in specific climates whereby the gowing process can be monitored and policed, marijuana can grow both indoors and out, thoughout the entire united states (including Alaska).

Every drug defined by the FDA (regardless of its dangerousness) that is sold has a federal tax stamp on it. This tax generates billions of dollars in revenue to the government. The government does not have the infrastructure nor the manpower to police the uncontrolled growth and sales of a low technology horticulture based industry.

Sure they can find the massive fields growing in forests or in corn fields, but they can't do anything about the plants in individual back yards or artificially lit closets. Since they can't tax it, they make it illegal. This is the bottom line.

In addition to this, there are hundreds of billions of dollars contributed to the economy in health care, commercials, and law enforcement caused by death producing drugs (alcohol, tobacco, etc). Quite frankly, people get rich off the death and distruction caused by legalized drugs (including the federal government).

Isn't it ironic that an 18 year old (a legal adult) can go to war a die for their country but if they don't die in a fake war manufactured by Bush, when they come home they can't even get a beer without legal sanctions and reprisals. This is bullshit if you ask me.

Because cigarettes are LEGAL and marijuana is ILLEGAL.

The reason they don't outlaw cigarettes is because several states economy is built on tobacco and cigarette production......and, taxes from the sale of cigarettes raises billions and billions of dollars. If they outlawed cigarette, those taxes would be lost and there is nothing to replace them.

Besides, the government doesn't give a crapola if you smoke or not. Right now, it is politically correct to be against the habit. It's the "new" trend of the past 10 years or so.

It will pass.....already fat people and "bad" foods are already taking the place of the anti-smoking crapola. Watch for taxes to go up on foods that are "bad" for you like butter, bacon, processed foods and McDonald's....

Ethically speaking the reasons for banning substance use are… They 'supposedly' keep citizens form meaningfully contributing to society… Skipping over all the problems that banning substance use causes… Cigarettes are called a “working mans drug”, because of the instant gratification, take a 10 minute smoke break and you enjoy that same ten minutes more then somebody who doesn’t have a cigarette…

There is no sense in not legalizing pot. It seems that anything that makes you feel good is banned. Their biggest lie is that it is a gateway drug that leads to harder stuff. Yeah right. If every time someone drinks a beer it makes them crave a joint they would outlaw beer. It makes the politicians look good and gives the cops something to do. Not to mention that prison over crowding is a direct result of the stupid war on drugs. Its a tragedy that so many lives are being ruined over using drugs especially pot. A perfectly natural drug that God put here for us to enjoy and look what we have done with his gift.

It's prohibition all over again.
It didn't work then and it's not working now.
The social damage done by the ban far outweighs
the medical damage the drug might do.
When will they wake up and tax & regulate the stuff?

Part of the reason is the pharmaceutical industry is afraid of losing money, because marijuana is cheap and used for many health problems. The pharmaceutical industry has a lot of influence over the government.

In Ohio we cant smoke anything in public. But, it is perfectly legal for people to murder others based on the fact they are too young and defenseless to defend themselves inside their mothers womb.

Because it is too late to totally outlaw cigarettes.

Prohibition cannot work these days, unless it was something already prohibited.

Because too many lawyers are getting rich off the status quo. If it's legal, we won't need 'em anymore, will we?
