Brynna, go to a bookstore. Look at the books in the same genre as the one you wrote. Who published them? Those are the publishers who can actually get books in stores, where most sales take place.

Many of those publishers will only deal with literary agents, not directly with the authors. To find out which publishers need agents, check the listings in Writer's Market or Writers' & Artists' Yearbook in the UK.

Publishers listed in Writer's Market 2007 or 2008 are legit. No scams. Those are the ones I submitted to.

If you use Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks, you will know which publishers are scams. Personally, I wouldn't submit to a publisher - only to an agent.
