The only difference between the 40GB and 60GB PS3 besides backward compatibility is:

The 40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports, The 60GB PS3 has 4 USB ports.

The 40GB PS3 doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, but the 60GB PS3 has the digital camera flash card slots.

the 60gb can hook up to a psp and will watch blu-ray movies.
