The envelope is addressed to me, I just don't want someone to know I opened it without them being present.

Depends on how it is sealed. Normal envelops can be opened in a couple of ways. One is to steam the edge and the glue will loosen and you can carefully open the envelop. Be careful not to let water condense on the paper or else it will leave a mark.
Another way is to freeze the envelop and then you can sort of break the seal open.
However, there are different types of adhesizes keeping envelops shut these days. Some can only be opened by tearing them. Those are pretty secure.
The person never said anything about the mail. Just mentioned an envelop. Not illegal to open an envelop if it is not part of the mail.

i heard using a teapot and boiling water inside were the steam comes out the spout, then hold the letter up to the steam but dont get it wet and slowly pull at the lip of the envelope until it opens..

It's illegal in the United States to open mail not addressed to you, not even your spouse's mail.
I have heard of people steaming the glue seal to open the envelope and glueing it back shut.
