Why are the 'big rigs' called semis?

a true trailer has front and rear axles. the trailer on a big-rig only has the rear axles, with a kingpin hitch locked into a fifth-wheel plate, over the rear axles of the pulling tractor. It is properly called a semi-trailer, or semi, for short.
