Okay, I am not asking if you HAVE done this, or if you WOULD. I'm just asking if anyone has ever THOUGHT about it. When you know that your baby is asleep, and going to stay asleep for the next hour or so, have you ever thought of taking 20-30 minutes and running to the store or some other errand with out your baby? Including leaving the baby at home alone? Again, I'm not asking if you ever would, but just if you have ever thought about it. I think it would be interesting to hear everyone's experiences. Thanks.

Everyone, you're answers have been great. I'm sorry that I can't pick multiple best answers, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of 'best' huh? Thanks for your input.

"What to Expect the First Year" -- a genuinely awful book -- has a weird little safety page that hectors parents to, among other things, not run down to a basement apartment laundry without baby.
That sounds reasonable on the surface, but. I noticed there wasn't any prohibition on me going down to my own basement, even though my daughter sleeps on the third floor of my house. I've had plenty of apartments where the laundry was closer to the bedroom than my basement is now...
That said, nope, I haven't thought about it. Before my baby was born I did idly wonder if it would be feasible to run to the store (across the street, not a 20-30min thing) and back -- I did not think I would do it, but I did wonder. But now? No way. And, hooray for babywearing -- she's usually strapped to me anyway...

i find it fascinating that people respond so viciously to this question it feels like your asking something that it so filthy that your being judged on your parenting skills when really she just asking if your human and think something that you would never do. Yes i have thought about it I've got 2 school age kids and the school is 5 Min's from my house back in the day when my 2 year old would sleep for hours at a time i did contemplate leaving her to pick them up but i have never done it this doesn't make me a bad person. Thinking about something and deciding that it is too dangerous is what makes you a good parent never doing something because the book tells you you shouldn't surely doesn't set you up very well for future problems when there really is no right or wrong?

NO WAY.....that thought has never entered my mind.
There is NOTHING in the world worth leaving my baby along even for a few minutes to run next door.
There are way to many reason why no one should ever do that...does one know how fast an electrical fire could start? or breathing difficulties, oh my goodness... no way have I nor would I even consider leaving a infant, toddler, or child along.
It is not even legal to do this to a 12 year old kid.

I have thought about wanting to go sit on the porch for few mins while baby sleeps. I have thought about what would happen, and what has happened to people who did that...
Oops, had accident, now baby home alone for hours...
Oops, house burnt down...
I personally would NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER leave a baby home alone for ANY length of time, sleeping or not.

No, I never have even considered it. I don't think you can ever "know" that your baby really will be asleep for any amount of time. I have, however, gone outside for 20-30 minutes while my toddler is asleep. But I knew she could get up and would find me, and I would also be able to hear her cry.

Hell no! That is absurd! Anything can happen in those 20-30 minutes. Someone can break into your home or a fire or choking can occur. I never thought about it. Too dangerous.

NO way! We had a house fire recently and were lucky to save the dogs that we left home. We were gone less then 40 minutes, so I know first hand just how quickly tragedy can strike!

Boy...everyone here sounds so perfect! lol. Yeah. I've thought.."It only takes 11 mins to run to the corner and back..." but no, I never did it. I was just too scared something would happen.

No, I've never left a sleeping baby home alone, but yes, I have on occasion thought about how nice it would be to not have to wake a sleeping baby just to run some place quick. I wouldn't really ever do it, but honestly I have thought about how convenient it would be.

Thought about it yes, never done it before though. The first few months are so trying... no ones brain is ever srewed on right.
I think I'm crazy now... thought I was crazy about 5 minutes after I came up with the idea. I would have never actually let her.
