I am listening to Wagner's "Ride Of The Valkyries" right now and it totally rocks out.
Just curious if their were any other classical fans besides myself about?

I can answer some Baroque/Classical/Romantic/Modern questions, if you have any(?)

I was formally trained in Classical from Age 9. Then in 1967, I was at the swimming pool and Cream's Sunshine of Your Love came on - and I've never been the same (I think those funny looking mushrooms had something to do with it, too).

Hmph, I guess I have to be the first person to say that I don't care for it at all, I'm surprised actually. The best I can say about it is that I've heard a few compositions that didn't make mewant to break the speakers in the first 2 minutes, after two minutes of it though all bets are off and you better hope there aren't any heavy blunt objects anywhere close by.

I agree that it can set a great mood for a movie, but that's as much use as it will ever serve for me, have no use for the stuff. Although, if you replaced the brass section with a single bassist, the string section with a guitarist (electric), the woodwind section with a rhythm guitarist, and the percussionists with a single drummer, the composer with a vocalist, and had those 5 guys play rock songs, I could get into that.

P.S.
Despite the lack of sophistication in my msical preference I respect anyone who can compose a piece using an entire symphony, that's pretty amazing, I just don't ever want to hear it unless I'm watching The Lord Of The Rings or Star Wars.

P.P.S.
Thanks for saying something Rckts, I knew I couldn't possibly be the only one!

I do :)

I came across most of it for myself ~ sparked by the occasional track heard here and there.

I particularly like Elgar and Holst, but also have a small selection {useful things, free CDs with newspapers!} which includes :~
Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, Delius, Purcell, Warlock, Tchaikovsky.

There is a very special beauty in Classical music, and many Rock songs are in fact influenced by it, and often contain tiny sections.
I know that when Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman first got together, ML introduced JS to Wagner, and that's why 'Bat Out of Hell' sounded the way it did!

Oh yes, very much so.
After Rock [and many of it's subgenres] it's my favourite type of music. Wagner is absolute brilliance.
My favourite composers are Beethoven, Rossini, Bach, Weber and of course Mozart - amoung many others.
I'm particularly fond of artists from the Romantic and Classical eras.
Nice to see some other R&P'ers appreciate it.
I hardly ever go into the Classical section on Y!A though - they intimidate me, hehe.

phatzwav...; I adore opera. Rossini [<3] has composed some greats. But at the moment i'm listening to one of the scenes/songs from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi [the Pavarotti/Ponz/Studer version] - it's a wonderful opera.

I love Classical music.

One of my favorite compositions is 'The Planets - Jupiter' by Holst.

I also enjoy piano and cello music from Chopin, Beethoven, Shostakovich, etc.

Other composers I recommend are:

Tchaichovsky - '1812 Overture' & 'Serenade For Strings'
Vivaldi - 'The Four Seasons, Spring'
Grieg - 'Peer Gynt, Morning'

Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare For The Common Man' was of course covered by Emerson, Lake and Palmer and would be familiar to any fans of 'The Wide World Of Sports'

I also love Bach, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini

And another good composition from Wagner is 'Lohengrin'.

Since Dan C was brave enough to admit, I feel so much better. I don't hate classical music, but I'm not really into it either. Obviously for movies it works well. Some elements of classical are used by a few Goth bands like Within Temptation, but that's about as close as I get to it on a regular basis. I apologize in advance for my lack of culture.

Yes! I listened to only classical music for about six years, until I started to listen to rock.
I couldn't tell you what many of the pieces are called. I enjoy Beethoven, Mozart, etc. The symphony is a lot of fun to go to see. I once saw a Halloweenesque concert (played a lot of spooky music, Dans Macabre and Night on Bald Mountain, etc) that was a blast.

Bet you figured you could count me in, didn't you? I was raised on the stuff and it's a Sunday morning staple in my home. I honestly have an A to Z (well, B to W) collection, vinyl and CD's, and love them dearly. For every sound system I've had installed in my vehicles, I tell them ahead of time that I'll be bringing in Classical and Rock as a test for the fidelity of the system. Makes 'em back off of the bass trend immediately so prevalent in car audio. One of my earliest favorites, at age 3 or 4, was Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite."

I listen to a great deal of classical music. It's one of my favorites. I usually listen to Mozart, but have been known to have some good Handel, Tchaikovsky, and Bach blasting out my truck. It gets some funny looks that's for sure.
Don't forget about the Gregorian Chant either. That's some good stuff around sunset.
Lately, I've been into more of the Traditional styles from around the world. Classical is good, but it's the music of the aristocracy. Don't forget your common man roots!
