It was the draft that was the main cause of the hippy movement in the 60s. At least they had a reason for being anti-war.
The anti-war movement of today has to create fictional reasons to be anti-war. They're really nothing but a joke.
What we have today is an impressive combination of volunteers and the most sophisticated systems and theater operations. It works for us.
If you're not a brain-dead liberal, you might have noticed that we just walked into two countries, replaced their governments and rebuilt their countries with only 3000 casualties. That is impressive by any standards. We're making war look like child's play.
(At the same time, we also forced three antagonist countries to behave: Libya, N Korea and Iran. Eat your heart out, Clinton groupies!)

Truthfully it really has nothing to do with rich or poor, Dem. or Rep. There are more healthy individuals than our military will ever need that have no life or job and we are still supporting them;
Living in a small town there is quite a few 18 year olds (male and female) that are presently enlisting. A few did enlist for the bonuses, what I did find surprisingly delightful are the ones from upper-middle-class families that do want to serve their country while not living off their parents money.
It would be extremely beneficial to everyone if the young healthy individuals the government has support through welfare since they’re birth could be helped one last time by giving them some direction in their life with military service. It is very disturbing; this large amount of young individuals that believe life is just fine living in and hanging out in these public welfare housing developments. For many this is the only life they have ever known.
There are extremely too many young, very healthy individuals with no direction in life that need to be directed into becoming a productive member of our society. Since the government and our taxes have already paid to raise these young very healthy individuals since they were born; this alone should make it mandatory for these young minds who have a very narrow concept of life, finally being shown a greatly structure family environment like in our military. This would greatly benefit everyone.
If someone doesn't step in and guide these young and bored minds, many more will be lured into the family and money in the illegal drug market. I've watched this happen for three generations now; this history here just keeps repeating itself and keeps the illegal drug industry more profitable than the oil industry.

The Democrats that are asking for the draft have rightly identified that during the Vietnam War the protests began when the draft was initiated. They realize they can hinder the President's ability to execute the war when the general populace are dissatisfied and afraid of being drafted.
If you study the era, you will also notice that when the draft was eliminated (before the war was over) the college protests stopped almost immediately.

No, there is a difference between being drafted and enlisting. If one is very much in favor of a cause he should be first in line to sign up. If one is not in favor of a cause or has no real opinion or weak support he can wait until called to do his bit. I call it the gung ho factor. If one is so gung ho than they still need to put their money where their mouth is. During the time when we have a draft we also have people enlisting.

Only if they remove age and sex limits from the draft. Middle aged men can fight better than teenagers. Every time I play paintball with older guys I usually get sniped once or twice by one of them.

Yea, it looks like a "draft" is inevitable. It's obvious when see soldiers doing 3 tours in Iraq.

The only war I would ever fight in, would be one where myself and my family are directly threatened, not just because the government told me to go. All of the potential conflicts listed above would be wars fought for money and power, which are unjust causes for war, so no, I wouldn't go, and I wouldn't expect anyone else to go either. The only reason it would get REALLY UGLY would be because George Bush's buddies need to buy a new yacht or something. This president is the worst ever and has wasted countless lives and resources for nothing. What a waste.

Yes.
The Left Wing would all be in Canada, very soon.
That's where thousands of Democrats went during Nam.
Draft-Dodging Coward Bill Clinton was too frightened to even go to Canada.
So he had his rich & powerful friends pull strings for him.
