Limitations on speech include instances where it would cause danger to anyone else (for example: screaming "fire" in a packed movie theater)

A basic rule to remember regarding the Bill of Rights is that all of them are freedoms unless it impedes on someone else's freedom or harms them in some way.

The most famous limit on freedom of speech comes from:
Schenck v United States (1919)

In the Supreme Court case, the court decided that speech could be limited when a "clear and present danger" exist. The court used the example of shouting "fire" in a crowded theater.

You can read more about this case at: http://www.socialstudieshelp.com/CourtCases.htm

Also, courts have further limited the freedom of speech of minors. For example, try standing up and screaming obscenities in class. You will be removed; an individual's right to speech does not trump the rights of others (i.e. education).

One place I know where there are limits on the freedom of speech thing is in court. Take back to a sitting judge or lie and you'll be held in contempt of court and maybe behind bars. Saying something like you're going to kill someone can get you into trouble also but yet that's freedom of speach. The freedom of speech thing doesn't work in many countries around the world, thousands of people have to keep their months shut for fear of punishment. Think your lucky star we really don't have to worry about that here.

slander and libel.

You're not allowed to state lies about a person in public or in public writing. The person can sue you for doing such.

Also, there is the new crime called "hate speech." If you are classified as doing that you may go to jail or be sued.
