I would suggest going to Stockholm and going around the old town. Maybe take a tour to see the major sites. I was there last summer for a one stop on a cruise and that's what we did. Good shopping there as well!

Yes indeed, Sweden is very large, but it has just a few cities. It depends on what kind of person your are: the city type ore the nature type?
If you like cities, you definitely have to go to Stockholm, see "Gamla Stan" (the old town center), the castle, the Vasa museum and doing one of the boat cruises in summer. In case you find the time, it's also worth to take a short trip by bus or train to Uppsala with it's great cathedral, castle and town center.
But Sweden also has a wonderful nature, lots of forest, beautiful lakes and the chance of seeing a moose. So if you prefer this, you should visit the Siljan lake region (Dalarna) in central Sweden (e.g. Mora, Orsa or Rättvik).

Sweden's way too big (about the same shape and size of California) to see in one day but if you only have one day, go to Stockholm and see Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum.
