It's funny that Einstein should mention "2001".
I've wondered, but there is no way to tell unless the "visitors" left something behind to let us know that they stopped to visit and that they're really sorry that we weren't "home" yet.

Maybe aliens put life here.
They had 9 billion years before our sun was even born to evolve and to travel through space.
Who knows, we might get out into space and find remnants of hundreds of alien civilisations that have long since disappered.
Its certainly possible because there just has to be life somewhere else in the universe, the odds are way too high for there not too be life somewhere in the vastness of space.

Quite possible. In a few decades we will be able to find other worlds like earth and determin, from their atmospheric compositions, wheter or not there is life there. Earths atmosphere has given it up as a living planet for a billion years. So if there has been other beings in our galaxy during the past billion years with technology we soon will have they would have known about there being life on earth. But as for anyone visiting us... That cannot be answered as there is no proof of that happening.
-edit-
"Mission to Mars" is probably the dumbest movie ever made.

that's absolute nonsense to point there have been historic technologies that we ought to no longer tournament or that mysteriously disappeared from the archaeological checklist. There are patently issues we've not yet chanced on, yet no longer something in besides to point any historic technologies exchange into the paintings of alien intelligence. The pyramids of Egypt are oftentimes stated by potential of followers as examples of alien tips, yet this flies interior the face of evidence we do have. This incorporates bills by potential of the Egyptians themselves as to how the pyramids have been equipped. The pyramids we see now weren't all equipped at as quickly as, and various the older ones tutor each and every sign of being a style of trial and mistake shape. Even the later ones have been laid out with little greater 2 sticks and products of string, that's very undemanding to do with a elementary information of geometry which all of us understand the Egyptians had in abundance. there's no ought to invoke extraterrestrial beings. historic civilizations have been completely able to such shape.

If aliens exist and travelled to earth before man evolved, why wouldn't they stay? Blue planets are a rare find.
Maybe Douglas Adams was right and the dolphins are aliens: if so, they are very tolerant of our behaviour.
I just hope they're not too angry with the Japanese for hunting and eating them on a regular basis.
If you leave us, can I come too?
