Are you using Internet Explorer? If yes, switch to Firefox.
After you have downloaded and installed Firefox, get "NoScript", which is a free Firefox add-on or "extension".
AVG anti-spyware is effective, but so is AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. They're both free.
Webroot SpySweeper is excellent, but it costs about $20 to $30 at BestBuy, Fry's, Staples, etc. I was able to get a three-license version at BestBuy for less than $30.

Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware weekly.
