We used to do this, the kids and I. One year it would be a kitchen/cooking theme with cute little gadgets like a candy thermometer, spices, one of those tiny spice graters, cinnamon sticks, etc
Another year we did "art" with paintbrushes, a box of pastels, drawing pencils etc.
Or socks and scarves - its always fun because everyone is getting the same "theme" and its funny to see some of the socks being given as gifts - my daughter loves wild and crazy socks so its always fun shopping for her -- its just seems to bring another feeling of "cohesiveness" to xmas and no one is left floundering wondering what the heck to get as stocking stuffers --
