This is a very tough question

Projected stats of my TOP 5 (2008)

1) Alex Rodriguez (NYY) 54 HR 140 RBI .305 BAA 18 SB 134 RUNS

2) Jimmy Rollins (PHI) 28 HR 105 RBI .290 BAA 40 SB
128 RUNS

3) Hanley Ramirez (FLA) 38 HR 110 RBI .302 BAA 52 SB
141 RUNS

4) Ryan Howard (PHI) 57 HR 148 RBI .288 BAA 1 SB
135 RUNS

5) Jose Reyes (NYM) 26 HR 96 RBI .298 BAA 74 SB
134 RUNS

*Wild Card #6
Albert Pujols (STL) 44 HR 130 RBI .315 BAA 4 SB
136 RUNS

*By virtue of those stats (Rotisserie or Head to Head), I will pick Hanley Ramirez over AROD because of the missing link (SB) which is a hard commodity to win. Hanley has enough power to give you the home runs and good batting average that will not deplete your team. He will also drive in more runs considering Miguel Cabrera is gone and Hanley will certainly move to the 3rd spot of the batting order.

- If you look at AROD's new contract, there is a clause where he get paid more money if he hits home runs at record pace. That will sure limit him for stealing bases because that is a high risk on injury.

Real Baseball fans and Fantasy wiz will understand where I am coming from. You can pick anyone from those top 5 as a 1st pick and no one will doubt you decision. Albert Pujols is another one to consider but it will be tough because STL lineup is depleted with age and departures.

If I had the 1st pick in the 2008 Fantasy Baseball Draft, I would go with everybody's choice and go for A-Rod, even though I'm not a Yankees fan and here's why...

- His value doesn't change one bit by staying in NY for another 10 years or so with the same lineup basically intact.

- A-Rod has manage to stay healthy when injuries has been a big issue for fantasy players, so he manage to stay consistent for the time being, chasing Bonds' tainted record.

- The 3B position is suddenly getting deeper with David Wright, Miguel Cabrera and Ryan Braun, but A-Rod is still the best at his position. I do however expect a drop-off from his 50 HR campaign (since he is basically playing in the first year of his new contract, a first since 2001) but still project to at least have over 40 HR and 120 RBI, still justifying his number one spot.

If A-Rod wasn't that great, then here are some other choices that I wouldn't mind pick as number one...

- Hanley Ramirez, SS, Florida: In his first year, he show blazing speed. In his second year, he show his power. What does the third year bring for H-Ram? The heart and soul of the offense, Miguel Cabrera, just went to Detroit, so the former Boston prospect will try to do something he has never done...LEAD A TEAM. His value will be based on his power now that he's projected to bat number 3 in the lineup with former Tigers prospect Cameron Maybin being the new leadoff man. However, his SB total might go down a bit but the RBI total will jump, so it's still a win-win situation if you draft Ramirez as your top SS.

- Jose Reyes, SS, NY Mets: He just turn out to be a one trick pony in 2007, as his power numbers were down from 06, but establish a career high in SB. Expect a big rebound from the former number 2 pick of 2007.

- Albert Pujols, 1B, St. Louis: How the mighty have fallen? This former number 1 pick of the 07 draft show us that he is human after all. Then again, this might a blessing for fantasy owner to take him that low, the same that A-Rod was facing in 07 and look what happen?

- Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia: He owns the position and will continue to dominate that position for years.

ARod... he will get you Runs Scored, RBIs, HRs, Batting Average and Stolen Bases. If you pick down the line, then consider Jimmy Rollins, Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Matt Holliday, Ichiro Suzuki and/or Carlos Lee. All those guys cover multiple categories and play every day. A pitcher is a bad first round selection.

I'm going to go with the consensus also, Arod. But 2 people are thinking on the right track with Rollins and Granderson. You look for someone who's going to give you points in a lot of categories. Those 2 with their base stealing, ability to hit for avg and extra base hits could definately be top draft picks too. Add david wright too.

Sheer numbers you have to go A-Rod unless you are in a league that emphasizes the Pitchers role then I would look at Johan Santana. Don't laugh I was in one of these leagues two years ago, did not check out the settings as was wondering why all the pitching was gone by round three and I could still get fabulous hitters in the sixth round...half the season later I finally caught up to the pack!

No one better than a-Rod in fantasy baseball if he continues to run a little, along with everything else, and gives you 20+ stolen bases.
