I find the pneumonic OIL RIG usefull:

Oxidation is loss (of electrons)
Reduction is gain (of electrons)

Cu2+ is being reduced, therefore it is the oxidizing agent.

Likewise, MG is being oxidized so it is the reducing agent.

copper accepts electrons (is reduced) therefore it is an oxidizing agent for Mg
