Firmware is a computer program stored in a chip on any hardwares main board. Firmware is what boots up a electronic device like a router for example. The chip is read-only memory (rom), so it does not need power to keep data stored. So when you turn on a electronic device the firmware tells it what to do. Like the bios in a computer you can configure things the pc does when it is first turned on like which drive the computer should boot from. In a routers case the firmware would make the device connect to the internet when turned on. Firmware can be updated to make devices work faster computers, routers even mobile phones. The manufacturer of the hardware releases firmware updates for free usually can be downloaded from their website.
