Babies tend to drop their birth weight,so she will need to get back up to her birth weight. She will need to learn how to suck, swallow, and breathe on her own when eating. This is how it went for my little girl when she was in the NICU.

My son was 9 1/2 weeks early. He was in the hospital for one month. The stipulations for him going home were: He needed to take every feeding by breast or bottle and consume at least 140 or so ml within an 8-12 hour period, hold his own temperature, keep feedings down while lying flat, pass the carseat test, and have no apnea or spells. He was nursing at 32 weeks, off the oxygen monitor and IV by day 3, out of the isolette within a day of starting the weaning process, and when given the option. took every feeding from me and cleared 200+ ml in the 8 hour period before he was released. Age and weight doesn't matter because my son went home before 35 weeks and was less than 5lbs. At only 4 weeks early and no breathing problems, baby should be home faster than you would think!

My son was born 4 weeks early as well. He was in NICU for 2 days. He was also breathing fine on his own from the time he was born, they just wanted to watch him for a couple of days to make sure he was okay. We were home at 5 days, we were there for so long due to the fact that I had to have an emergency c-section too though. So she may get to go home even sooner. Good luck and congrats on the newest member of your family!

My baby was 4 weeks early at 4 pounds 3 ounces at birth she came home at 4 pounds 1 ounce, I had a c-section and had to stay in the hospital for 3 days my baby girl came home with me. As long as the baby can breath on its own, hold it's temprature, and eats properly and passes the car seat test (in FLa they do this) the baby will be home before your cousin knows it.

My baby was 3 1/2 weeks early I took her home after the normal 3 days in the hospital. But she was 5 lbs & from what I was told, that's the weight min. to go home since car seats start at 5 lbs.

if the baby has no breathing issues and has a healthy weight he/she will come home in some days. Really depends on what the Dr's think.

My youngest was 5 weeks early and was home with me just over 24 hours after her birth.
Every baby is different.

It all depends on the baby...could be 4 weeks or less..some babies are better developed than others...boys often need more care.

if she can take a feeding without tiring out, can breathe with no assistance and can regulate her temp then she will like;y go home a day or so after birth.
