The noise is very annoying and can last for several minutes or more. I dont have any programs running at the time. What is this noise and is there a problem with my computer.

It could be one of the fans in your computer. It will run faster if you have more programs open in order to cool the cpu.

The version of the Windows OS (Operating System) and being on the internet has nothing to do with the noise.

It is probably you cooling fan ready to bite the dust, (if you get my drift), or the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) just getting worn out.

Open your case, pinpoint the problem and replace the culprit.

If it is your HDD, then do a fast backup and go to the store and get another (install it the same way as the old one).

If it is the cooling fan, then you must get a new power supply (also easy to put in) but if you ain't got the savvy, have a pro do it.

Don't get ripped off though, cheatin' dog service people will tell you it is a major task and try to "RIP-YOU-OFF".

It is about a half hour job (1 hour max), so pay them accordingly

That is the sound of your hard-drive backing up.
