It really depends on the high school. In some larger schools in big cities, they might require a certificate in coaching, and usually hire someone with lots of experience and a good record from another school.

I work at a small 1A school in Kansas and the head coach here is just a parent. But he has been here a lot of years and has won a lot of games. So, now, he's highly qualified to coach.

Still, a large school in GA just asked my dad to help with offensive coaching for their varsity team. Up until now, he has only coached at the Junior High Level, but he has done a really good job.

You will probably have to start out volunteering somewhere and prove yourself. Just like with anything, if you do well, you will get noticed, and have some things to add to your coaching resume. Then, you can apply, or be asked to coach at the high school level.

Also, at many schools, they hire someone with a teaching certificate who is also interested in coaching. At my old high school, the political science teacher was the head coach. It just depends on the school.

A lot of this has already been said.

Most schools require head coaches to be employed by the school in some fashion. With Football (and basketball) it is usually as a teacher. My alma mater the FB coach is the Agriculture teacher. Before him it was a PE teacher. A knowledge of football is also required. Because you would be coaching males, you would need a male assistant coach of some sort to let you know when you can and cannot be in the locker room (female coaches seeing naked boys is bad and the same is true for male coaches female athletes). That being said, while getting a degree in education, I would recommend coaching community football via Parks and Rec, the YMCA, or some other organization. And then when you get to student teaching, I would try to get placed somewhere that you would be able to help coach football. And in college I would see if you could help with the college football team. If you are able to do that you should be able to get several letters of reference from other coaches, from players, from parents and from athletic directors.

A 4 year degree in Education with a minor in Physical Education is the starting point from state to state. Some states require collegiate football experience only and hire part time coaches from the local colleges. The best place to ask this question is your local Texas high school. Good luck

Those saying you can't or won't be allowed to coach because your female are wrong. just google "female football coach" and you'll see plenty of examples already out there. You will need experience, and a great way to "cut your teeth" is to start volunteering in the youth programs. Many H.S.s activily participate in the town's youth programs. Ours dictates base D and O sets and terminology so that the kids already are familiar with it when they get to high school.
Build a reputation from there and work your way up. It can and has been done. But know this, unfairly as it may be, you will be held to a higher standard than males. You will just have less wiggle-room in coaching areas.

You do need a teaching degree helpful if it's majoring in Physical Education, some strong ties to the community, and a sex change. They will not let a women coach boys football. You wouldn't even be allowed to go into the locker room! Where are you going to give pep talks?

Nothing. The head coach in my town is 25 years old, and the only reason he got the job is that his family is rich, and probably paid for the field. He has no qualifications other than playing high school football poorly.

Have a pulse...

Just kidding.

If you want to teach and coach, you'll need a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential.
