I was wondering what these numbers are and what they are for. Does it have anything to do with the person the package is being shipped to?

They are big long numbers that allow keeping track of millions of packages a year by scanning the bar codes or manually entering the number. They are preprinted on shipping slips and supplied by computer programs and have nothing to do with address shipped to or from. At the time of shipping, the number is connected to a specific package to which it has been applied in the companies' computers so that you can look it up on the Internet. I have a couple of blank labels with tracking numbers already on them sitting on my desk.

All packages , USPS or UPS ,are given a number when they are received. This tracking number follows the package to its destination. At any transfer point in between, the number is also recorded.. In the event the parcel is not received,or is claimed as not having been received,a tracer is initiated by UPS or USPS from the starting point to determine where it was missplaced in the system or who signed for it at the destination. Several people have tried to collect on fraudulant claims of loss.

You can enter the numbers on the respective service's website and track your packages that you have sent or are expecting.
