Most people that are in gangs are not educated enough to do anything else, so they pretty much join for the protection and so they can feel they belong to something. They ususally have no choice but to join a gang.

Many times, inner city teens grow up in low-income families where the father is not present and the mother is working all the time or is busy taking care of the other 5 children in the home so they feel like they have no family and a gang gives them that sense of family and brotherhood that they weren't getting at home.

"Why" is certainly a very difficult question. Here is one observation my wife had in talking with some of her 7th DC students:
They didn't understand the idea of not wanting to be in a gang. For them, it's just what is done.
I suppose it is the same feeling I had growing up about college. It was always assumed that I would go, so I assumed that I would go.

makes people feel together and beloning... a sence of community. I have never been in a gang but I have observed that people in gangs usually have famiily problems so they want a good family so they join a gang. Or to impress girls.

I think that people like to be in gangs because it makes them feel like they fit in somewhere.

because they feel like they wanted and belong. obviously mostly all of dudes that join gangs got some kinda family issues.... or they just want some homies that show em love and got their back.... but sometimes they just have no choice or grew up around gang bangin (feel me?)

people have the choice to be in a "gang" probably for security, power, family, excuse for violent behavior, need to distroy public property, and etc.

they are stupid!!! i hear all these reasons of it being because they have no family or love that their gang gives them but to me I I think it's just stupid because if they have all these emotional issues of abandonment why don't they care when they kill other Innocent people who have families
