Covers are not required for all cloth diapers.

Flat, fitted, contour and pre-fold diapers need covers. The covers do not need to be washed after every use! Use a new one at each diaper change to ensure that they have time to air out inbetween uses. If they are soiled then they can't be used again until washed. Most people have 4-6 covers.

I would highly recommend pocket diapers. I have tried many diapering systems and I like these the best. They are a waterproof cover with a fleece interior and there is an opening at the back for inserts. I like these for their ease of use, option to increase the absorbency of the diaper and their quick dry time! I use the following kinds:

- Swaddlebees
- Fuzzi Bunz
- bumGenius
- Baby Kangas
- Wonderoos

I highly recommend getting some hemp inserts for pocket diapers as they are the most absorbent material you can get!

Normally with cloth diapers, you have to put plastic pants on over the diapers to keep them from leaking. Check in the baby aisle by the diapers. They will have the plastic pants there. Get several pairs as you will need to change, wash and dry them with each diaper change.

You need some sort of plastic cover.

Good for you for choosing this planet friendly option.

I took every penny I did not spend on disposables and put it into bonds for my daughters.
The base amount doubled every 7 years.
We called this her 'diaper bonds' and by the time my daughter was 18 she had 12 thousand dollars.

If you buy AIO's (all in ones) then that's all you need.

If you buy fitteds or prefolds you need a cover.

And pockets you need an insert.

I use AIO's and Pockets but will use fitteds most likely on the new baby. AIO's are super easy, they go on with no more work than a disposable and are much cuter too =)

It's wonderful to read about so many moms using cloth diapers. I hate disposables and what they do to our environment not to mention what they do to our babies. Go to this link and read the many reasons why not to use disposables and browse through the website and you will find out about cloth reusable diapers and covers.
