My sister thinks she saw this play at the Shaw Festival in Niagra-on-the-Lake in 2004, but we can't figure out wich one it is. It's about a young woman who is very prim and proper, and she's afraid to bring her fiance home because her family is completely eccentric.
Her brother is inventing explosives in the basement, so there are a lot of explosions, and her grandfather told everyone he was dead to evade taxes.
It's set in the Victorian era.
My drama group loves the sound of this play, but we can't figure out the title, or even the author. It may not even really be Shaw.
If anyone knows the answer to this, they will be making a lot of actors very happy!

The answer above is correct. Its a fun play and many amateur theater groups have done it with great results - there are lots of great parts so lots of actors will be happy. BTW the play won the Pulitzer prize. There is a foamous film version by Frank Capra staring Cary Grant ,Jimmy Stuart, Jean Arthur and lots of first rate character actors. Capra won Best Director Oscar and the film was voted best picture. What are you doing there looking at your screen - go out and rent it.

The play you're thinking of is "You Can't Take It with You" by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman.
