I just bought a computer and there was no "wireless" option i could select, so now I've got not internet. We've got wireless in the house that I was using on my laptop, but I haven't had a desktop in a while, SOOO I'm wondering what I need to buy.
I was HOPING that these usb wireless adapters would do the trick, but now I'm not so sure it'll be that simple.
Do I need to buy a new modem for my desktop?

If:
1. You have a wireless network in your house.
2. Your desktop computer has an open USB port.

You should be able to purchase a USB wireless adapter.

You should be good to go.

You can purchase a wireless adaptors for a desktop.

They come with drivers on a CD (often a mini CD) and instructions. It is always best to check the internet for driver updates.

Wireless USB adaptors
The simplest is likely one that plugs into your USB port as you already mentioned.

Wireless Card adaptors
There are Wireless Cards that plug into spare expansion slots inside your computer.

They do work fine, may be slower than a wired connection.

Make sure you find out what type of wireles router you are connecting to (G or N router - they use different protocols). Some adaptors can connect to both.

Some Wireless USB adaptors:
DLink RangeBooster G USB Adapter (WUA-2340)
D-Link Wireless G USB Adapter (WUA-1340)
Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter (WUSB54GC-CA)
Trendnet Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter

Some Wireless Card adaptors:
D-Link WDA-2320 RangeBooster G Desktop Adapter
D-Link Wireless RangeBooster N Desktop Adapter (DWA-542)
D-Link Wireless-G PCI Desktop Adapter (WDA-1320)
Dlink Xtreme N Wireless Desktop Adaptor (DWA-552)
Linksys Wireless N Desktop Adapter (WMP300N-CA)

Good Luck

You can buy a wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) and install it in one of the PCI slots on your PC. The instructions for the installation are usually included in the packaging of the card.

You need to find out what kind of internet you have or need to get before you start buying any hardware. It is extremly likely you have all the hardware you need and simply are not setting it up properly.
