First of all, Nemo didn't show ANY deaths, so I seriously doubt that any five year old would be upset about it, unlike Bambi's mother, which caused many a child to cry (my Mother included, when she was a kid!). Granted, Nemo had some scenes that might be too intense for a five year old, but most get over it, quickly, thanks to excellent characters, dialogue, and plot. Similar with Babe.
Second, what's wrong with a little angst in a child? Are you sure that it's YOU who isn't disturbed by the thought of such? Let your child explore the world now, so that he or she may learn, and not be afraid of the inevitable (this goes for just about anything, except, of course, things that could goes physical harm, but if I needed to say that . . . !). You'll eliminate virtually every movie on the planet if you remove the question of death, which is a part of life!
Third, do you REALLY want your child to grow up thinking that life is full of Smurfs, Teletubbies, Wombles, Barney, and other fanciful fluff???
Fourth, here's my list, in no particular order
(avoid remakes and sequels!
also, kids don't have to understand the movie;
they only need to be entertained by it,
which this list most certainly will do,
not to mention stir their imaginations!)
- Stuart Little (1999)
- Chitty-Chitty, Bang-Bang! (1968)
- The Never Ending Story (1984)
- Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory (1971)
- Mary Poppins (1964)
Fifth, if you don't like any of the above,
click on any of the following links,
though I'm sure that anyone could find
SOMEthing wrong with ALL of them!

Toy Story 1 and 2 are good, Monsters INC is a really good movie too. If you have a girl try some Care Bears movies like "Big Wish Adventure" or "Journey to Joke-A-Lot." Dora, Wonderpets, and Spongebob also work well with my daughter.
