Are you asking about a backgound search for employment, renting property or another purpose? If for employment the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse has a good guide as to what constitutes a background search and what things an employer can check. The exact extent of a background check will vary by employer, however they normally get your criminal record (felonies only or felonies and misdemeanors) and credit record.
