Maybe they have superior technology. Where were we 500 years ago?
Maybe there IS a way to travel faster than light?

If they are intelligent, they'll stay away....

Statistically, there are probably other intelligent beings in this galaxy, assuming that they didn't wipe themselves out playing with the kinds of toys we play with (nukes, germs, & chemicals) or with some really nasty things that they may have come up with.

Since we're really only in the first 100 years of being a people with "advanced" technology, and only 10000 years into being "civilized" species, statistically any other intelligent life forms "out there" will be ahead of us. Watching the speed with which we're advancing, even two or three hundred years would put them WAY ahead of us. Again, statistically, the odds are better that their technology is hundreds of thousands to millions of years ahead of where we are now. In that case, they could be walking around invisibly right now, making notes of all we do and say, trying to get an idea of what it must have been like for their ancestors, a few hundred thousand generations ago. I think that if they're smart enough to get here, they are both smart enough to stay hidden and own the technology to make that happen. We won't see them unless they want to be seen. And they darn sure wouldn't need to "abduct" people for any reason. They'd have scanners that could probably map every molecule in a body and determine its function.

Whether their physics allows them to "exceed" the speed of light, warp space, or move from point A to point B instantaneously, or they are stuck with chemically powered rockets and solar sails, they would have had more than enough time to travel from wherever they originated to here. And they'd probably do it, even if it meant multi-generational ships on one-way voyages...just as we'll do in the next couple centuries.

I suspect that intelligent life does exist elsewhere, just that it is VERY rare. I do not believe they can come here. The distances between stars are so vast that crossing them will forever remain a dream. In their book "Life and Death of Planet Earth" the authors show a way that the earth could be moved outward from its orbit as the sun continues to brighten. They consider that a TRIVIAL problem compared to the difficulties of interstellar travel. The NASA website:

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/research/warp/scales.html

if read carefully, basically says that interstellar flight would require something approximating magic. Lots of heavy-duty serious magic.

I don't rule out the possibility that they exist. That's why I participate in SETI@home. However, the odds on life starting anywhere are amazingly long, but that is offset by the vast number of star systems there are.

The chance of us picking up a signal - particularly a radio signal - is extremely remote. We have had radio on earth now for 100 years out of the 450 million years the earth has existed. To an alien life form radio would probably seem as quaint as sending smoke signals.

The distances involved would prevent them ever meeting with us.

So... we will probably never know, but I'll keep looking - just in case!

I do believe that there is intelligent life out there in the universe somewhere and it is very possible that they could have a technology a million years more advanced than the human race,, So ya I do think its quite possible but visiting earth would depend on any given person to believe,,

theres about 100 million stars in our galaxy the milky way, there are about 40million galaxies in the known universe all with 100s of millions of stars so statistic wise..... if theres 1 planet in our galaxy with 'intelligent' life on then theres should be 40million more out there. and would an advanced race make contact? what would we do if we found a planet with beings on and they werent advanced? take them and experiment most likely! or maybe try and show them how to build houses, make fire, educate them, show them right from wrong? so yes i do believe they have been here! at the beginning of our evolution they gave us a push in the right direction, on the evolution chain we havent even crawled out of the sea yet! and yes i think they come back to watch our progress.

My lover say probably many planets have intelligent life but too far away to visit us. He say no way to come. Nothing matter travel light's speed. Mass become infinite if it can do that. Burn up whole universe power rocket still not reach light speed. We seee Star Trek yesterdy. It fantasy.

there is a way to travel faster than light on a quantum scale.
its called quantum tunneling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_tunneling

(we can only get it to work with very tiny pieces of an atom's parts)

perhaps "they" could do it on a larger scale

BUT

earth is a very unimportant needle in a MASSIVELY HUGE hay stack made up of nothing but other needles separated by huge amounts of light years.

the odds of them coming here are very very slim, but the odds of life on all the other billions of needles in this hay stack are fairly high.

point is, space is huge and probably full of life its just difficult to travel all the empty distances just to go randomly site seeing in the universe.

I do assume that there is a nice chunk of life out there that have had a head start on us...... look at the dinosaurs. they started to exist 100 million years ago. humans only started to show up 5 million years ago.

I imagine that some other life out there has had at least the full 105 million years to evolve. if so, they are FAR FAR (20x) ahead of us, along with their technology.

The sheer enormity of possible life-bearing sun systems almost guarantee that life exists somewhere in the universe besides Earth.

The sheer enormity of the SIZE of the universe pretty much also guarantees that we won't be visited, although it's not scientific to say "never" or "won't".

Just highly unlikely.

As vast as the universe is;I think it would be pretty arrogant for us to believe that ours is the only planet with "intelligent" life. Have they been here...well look how quickly we have advanced since Roswell. You judge. What proves they are intelligent-they only visit!
