Defraging a computer will not harm it. Rather, it is good for the PC and should be done regualrly. Any time you delete a file, the space it used to occupy is marked as "free" and a new file is stored in that space. If the space is smaller then the new file, Windows will split the file up or two or more locations. Over time, as you add and delete files, they can become more and more fragmented. Each time the computer has to hop to seveal spots to save or load a file, it slows things way down.
A "Defrag" goes through the computer and rearranges all the parts of each file back together. So if you have not done one before, it can take a few hours to complete (Start it before you go to bed). But once done, the computer will run much faster, and may gain some additional free space.
To do a defrag, open My Computer. Right Click on the C: hard drive listing or icon. Select Properties. Go to the Tools tab. Click the Defragment Now button.

Make sure you have the minimum required space (15% for the built in, third party tools work with much lesser)
Run a diskcleanup to delete stuff that you dont need anyways as there is no point in defragmenting it.
Boot into Safe Mode and run the tool. Start>accessories>systemtools>diskdefragmenter.
Regarding whether its safe, there is no actual physical contact with the drive surface to increase wear and tear when you defrag, atleast not as much as would be caused by reading and writing off a heavily fragmented drive. My personal experience has been that the PC is faster and more responsive when frag levels are minimum. It also avoids excessive drive activity if done regularly and prevents potential drive problems. How often you need to do it can be decided on the basis of the fragmentation analysis report. You can monitor it for a while to check for any heat issues etc.
Also its a good idea to backup important files regularly before you do any maintenance.

i dont think so... running a virus scan and defrag at the same time wouldnt do anything more than slow down your system at the time but your notebook would be just fine after that. do a defrag and if possible a hardware test on that hard drive...if it shows ok. try loading other new software to see if it behaves the same way....drive or fan spins loudly. i dont think your drive is bad but its not out of the realm of possibility... troubleshoot that drive. try to re-create the problem changing the variables. if the laptop behaves just fine w/out issues minus that software, id leave that software off and chalk it up to software incompatibility. of course, it could be the laptop was overheating a bit and that was the normal ramping up of the fans to cool down your system... how long had the machine been running?

Defrag is designed to make your computer run faster. I defrag mine 3 or 4 times a week. Along with a good registry cleaner, spyware remover and antivirus program, my computer cooks along most of the time.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Defrag actually helps system performance. You can click on start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. You can click analyze now to see how the files on your hd look, and a recommendation of whether or not you need to defrag.
