I am on my 1st month of birth control and was supposed to start my period yesterday (also the day i began taking the inactive pills). And i have a bit of spotting when i wipe only, but its not a period.

I am scared it is pregnancy bleeding and was just wondering if this is typical of birth control to be causing light periods. or if ya think i may be pregnant?

Almost nobody starts their period on the first day of the inactive pills. It's much more typical to begin about two or three days into the inactive pills... the bleeding you get is a side effect of hormone withdrawal, and your body has to, you know, withdraw:) So don't stress. While it's theoretically possible you're pregnant, it's by no means the most likely solution.

It's quite common to have lighter periods on the pill. You don't build up nearly as much of an endometrial lining so you have significantly less to shed.

If you had sex without backup birth control during your first month of taking the pill, you very well could be pregnant. It is NOT recommended to do so while your body is still getting used to the pills.

The pill can lighten bleeding to the point of not having a period at all (they thin your uterine lining so you don't have anything to shed). It could have been breakthrough bleeding. Typically you don't start the first day of inactive pills; I always started Tuesday or Wednesday of the inactive week.

Im going on my 8th month on the pill. I dont take the inactive pills however(your choice) but your period will come 2-3days after you stop the "regular" pill.. stopping on a saturday you should get your period by tuesday or wed. but everyone's different the 1st month is scary but after that its alright because you know when your going to get your period and how long it will last!! Hope everything works out!! :D

I heard that birth control can lead to not only fewer periods but also to an eventual loss of periods in older age.

birth control affects your period a heck of a lot. while taken the pills you wont get a period, spotting maybe but not a period. brith control usually helps regulate your period and helps make it lighter than normal. if your that worried just go get a pregnancy test.
