The Duke was a great American. He portrayed the ideal American persona. I'm a huge fan, but if I were to pick the greatest American ever, it would be . . . Roosevelt (Teddy), Patton, King, Lincoln, Franklin, Jefferson, or the like.

He was an actor, and not a very good one at that.
Why would that qualify him to be the greatest American ever?
How about Thomas Jefferson? Frederick Douglass? Thomas Edison?
My vote would be for Will Rogers. He was a writer, a diplomat, even a movie star. He was one of the funniest men on the planet ever, and hung around with the biggest shots of his time. He helped us all get through the Depression and laugh at ourselves when life was not very funny.
He was sober, a family man, a wealthy and influential guy, and still proud of his fairly humble beginnings and Indian heritage. Even today his humor is appropriate and clean.
He died young, and I miss him.

In his list of B movies, he acted as the single man who won all the Battles that you can think of. In reality, he was neither a great American nor a good action. Also, he opted out of the military which if he had gone to war would have given him more stature than he has.
He is the type of man who if he were in the Marines, would lose his life before he left the bow doors of an LST.

I loved John Wayne, I loved his films, his stature his punch ups.
A great actor no, he was a great 'John Wayne' in every film he made.
He had and Oscar for 'True Grit' for his contribution to the film industry, not his acting talent.
He was the greatest 'John Wayne'

No, he wasn't the greatest American ever. He was the greatest American for a few years in the early 20th century, but that ended the day Chuck Norris was born.

It would be sad to think so.
He was a very limited actor who spent the whole of WW2 hiding in Hollywood while other actors like James Stewart enlisted and saw active service.
People confuse his screen roles with the man.
