I've got to learn this for an exam and i cant find any info anywhere!

Well you have to have the right geological conditions to have a hydrocarbon reservoir.

You have to have a porous and/or permeable reservoir rock. Usually it is a shale or a sandstone or another sedimentary rock.

You also need to have the right kind of geological structure, such as an anticline, to form a trap for the hydrocarbons.
