Most people do know this!! In the non-cartoon films the Pink Panther is a huge rare ruby however the panther i think your refering to is none other than......A PANTHER!!! He is a panther which is a large cat similar to a leapord. In the cartoons he is portrayed as a camp panther.

sarge927 is just about there. In the film the large diamond, when turned to the light in a particular way shows the shape of a 'pink' panther within it.

In the original movie "The Pink Panther" with Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Cleuseau (sp?), it wasn't an animal of any kind -- it was a very large, very rare pink-hued diamond.

in the cartoon the pink panther is a panther, just he walks on two legs...although if you follow the mystery story it's a diamond (a pink one)

The original was a person. But technically we are all animals so I guess it was an animal just not a panther. Still a mammal though.

The cartoon was developed with a cat(panther), because it eludes inspector Clueso, just like in the original, (he couldnt find the diamond) if you get my drift.
