There are two strong possibilities. The first and most common is that you've just experienced a failure of an ignition coil. When an ignition coil fails you lose power as the voltage to fire the spark plugs breaks down. The result is a weak spark that isn't strong enough to light the fuel mixture. you get a partial burn and a tremendous loss of power. If the coil failed you won't have spark and the engine won't start as you describe.

the second possibility is that the ignition module in the distributor sub assembly has failed. it would result in the same symptoms as the ignition coil and would require the distributor be replaced.
Usually if its the module that fails it will restart after the engine cools down.

If the plugs are fouled out from trying to start the engine, hold the accelerator on the floor as you crank the engine. that will put the car into "clear flood" mode and allow the car to start if its only that the plugs are flooded.

I'm guessing you most likely have a failed ignition coil as that is most common; hope that the coil is the cause of the problem as the distributor is much more expensive to replace.

hope that helps

ok first off you need 2 poeple for this test. start by taking one spark plug wire out and geting a long screw driver stick that in the spark plug wire where the sprak plug is normaly and hold that about a 1/4 inch from the engine. now have the second person inside the car turn the key over. what you are looking for is the spark. you must do this to everyone and if everyone gives off a spark then its not the distributor.
if its not that try taking out the mass air flow sensor and starting the engine if it works with it out then you nedd to clean it or replace it. good luck.

I had a 95 civic hatchback. my 2nd favorite car.. harvard blue. It was my alternator. But you said yours turns over so that rules out the starter, battery and alternator. You've checked out the fuel pump and filter. belt maybe?

broken timing belt is also possible, take off the oil fill cap and look inside while someone cranks it,if tha cam turns your ok,if it don't you have big problems.
