I am doing a quiz, it is 10 questions long and I am in need for your help.
I do not understand multiplying fractions but I do get adding and subtracting so here is the question and if you can please explain it to me in the easiest understandable format as possible, it is really much appreciated!

2/15 x 5/8

Also how do you do it with dividing also?

The answer is 1/12.

You can get this in at least two ways:

(i) Simply group together the separate terms in the numerator and denominator.

Thus (2/15) x (5/8) = (2 x 5) / (15 x 8) = 10/120 = 1/12.

(ii) "Cancel off" what one can beween the numerators and denominators in the original expression.

Thus (2/15) x (5/8) = (1/3) x (1/4) = 1/12.

Dividing by a fraction is analogous, except that you effectively TURN THE DIVIDING FRACTION UPSIDE DOWN, before multiplying by it. That's because DIVIDING by a fraction is the same as MULTIPLYING by its INVERSE.

So with YOUR numbers,

(2/15) / (5/8) = (2/15) x (8/5) = 16 / 75.

As you can see, with your numbers, no cancellation is possible when dividing one into the other.

Suppose instead that you wanted to find 4/35 divided by 8/21? Then

(4/35) / (8/21) = (4/35) * (21/8) =

84/280 = 6/20 = 3/10 [by method (i)], or

(1/5) * (3/2) = 3/10 [by method (ii)].

Live long and prosper.

I'm sure you'll pick someone else for best answer. But I'm giving it a shot! Read this thoroughly and carefully.

Multiplying fractions is the easiest.

Look here:

2/15x 5/8

This means that multliply the top number by the top number and the bottom number by the bottom number. It's 10/120.
Now you reduce this. The easiest way for me is to divide the top number and bottom number for greatest possible number that they both have in common. This is 10. The answer to this question is 1/12. You see, 10 divided by 10 = 1 ; the top number. 120 divided by 10 is 12.

When dividing fractions. Simply mulitiply by the reciprocal (the FIRIST fraction in the problem is flipped, let's say the first fraction was 2/3, just flip it, now it's 3/2.) Then multiply by that reciprocal by the SECOND fraction. That' show you divide fractions.

When dividing whole numbers AND fractions such as 1 1/2. Just do 2x1+1. Here's the solution: You do the bottom number times the whole number plus the top number. Remember this. the answer would be 3/2; keeping the bottom numbers the same. This is called an IMPROPER FRACTION. Remember this as well.

Here's another one: Convert 3 2/3 to an improper fraction. We do what I said: bottom number times whole number plus top number: 3x3+2=11. The answer is 11/3.

Converting Improper fractions to Fractions with whole numbers.

Let's say a math problem told you to convert 10/7 to a fraction with a whole number. All you have to do is divide the top number by the bottom number: 10 divided by 7. This is going to be 1 3/7. Notice that the bottom number is always the same. The remainder of the division is always the top number.

There you go and good luck at your quiz.
*the top number in a fraction is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator.*

When you add, for instance, 1/3 + 1/4, you have to do some multiplying in the process

(1/3)(4/4) + (1/4)(3/3) = 4/12 + 3/12

Here you multiplied the numerators together and multiplied the denominators together

So 2/15 x 5/8 = [2(5)]/[15(8)]

Watch for the opportunity to do some simplification first

2/8 = 1/4, 5/15 = 1/3

[2(5)]/[15(8)] = 1/12

Division

(2/15)/(5/8)

If I multiply the 5/8 by its reciprocal 8/5 the result is 1

Whatever is done to the denominator must be done to the numerator as well

[(2/15)(8/5)]/[(5/8)(8/5)] = (2/15)(8/5)]/1 = 16/75

Multiplying is easy. Multiply the tops and bottoms.

So 2/15 * 5/8 = (2*15)/(5*8) = 10/120 = 1/12

In dividing, simply flip the second fraction over.
In this case, 2/15 * 8/5 = (2/15) / (5/8)

2/15 * 5/8=

2 becomes 1 and 8 becomes 4
15 becomes 3 and the 5 becomes 1
2/15 * 5/8= 1/3* 1/4= 1/12

2/15 / 5/8= invert the second fraction and multiply

2/15* 8/5= 2*8=16 15*5=75
answer 16/75

2/15 x 5/8
All you have to do is times the top by top and the bottom by bottom so:
2x 5 = 10
15x8= 120

Which equals 10/120 which simplifies by dividing top and bottom by 10 to 1/12.

To divide you do the same as multiplication but you flip the thing you are using to divide upside down so 5/8 would become 8/5 then you just do multiplication so@
2/15 x 8/5 = 16/75

It is amazingly simple to multiply fractions. Forget L.C.D.

1 X 2 X 3 6 Multiply all numbers in numerator
------------- = -- ------------------------------------------------
4 X 5 X 6 120 Multiply all numbers in denominator
SIMPLIFY

To divide fractions flip the divisor and multiply.
(1/3) / (1/4) =(1/3 times (4/1) = 4/3 0r 1 + 1/3. Fraction have very helpful quirks.
