The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.

Only if we get to burn the yule log, sacrifice to Thor and Woden, and erect das taunenbaum un der garten...yah!
Oh, sorry, Loki too!
Yah, yah, yah, Der nudist dancing ist goot!

And that mid-winter festival was called the Saturnalia by the Romans and featured a decorated tree!, feasting (no turkeys) and the exchange of gifts, and was celebrated on Dec. 25!
If it looks like Christmas, sounds like Christmas, and tastes like Christmas, it must be the Satunalia!

Christmas is not an American holiday, nor is it the sole American religion.

As far as I am concerned, if someone that lives in a particular town wanted to put up a display along with the mainstream religious ones, I would see no problem with that at all, and I would welcome it.

You see, it does not matter about religion at all in the United States. Or anywhere else. Religion itself does nothing. It's people acting on their beliefs in the unknown that do.

So, since it actually does no harm (or good), is a representation of someone that lives in the community where the display can be seen, is not tasteless or offensive in the eyes of the Law, then sure. It should be OK.

Now, try to get that past your Mayor. It will be a good day for a laugh. The Christians in this country keep telling each other that our form of government is only based on Christianity and that Christianity is the American religion.

Of course, it's easy to tell lies to the majority when they share the same beliefs. I would lay odds that, if the majority believed it, the politicians representing them would be able to slip past them that it was our "Christian" duty to kill Jews for killing Jesus. And a lot of the yahoos would buy it and allow it to happen. Why not? They already allow pseudo-scientific Christian beliefs to make laws and govern society.

I'm all for a solstice tree celebration.

My family celebrates every verity of Mid Winter festivity we can find. Instead of limiting the activity I say expand it.

Have you read the history of "Bird Boys"

As long as there is no objection from any other religious group and they are allowed equal time and space to put up their displays I see nothing wrong with it. If one religion, however is favored over another than I don't believe anyone should.

Uhhhh Christmas is the celebration of the birth of a man named Jesus. Check the name...CHRISTmas. So why is your question even relevant? Can I celebrate John Waynes birthday on Martin Luther King Jr day?

Irregardless, it is Christmas now. So create your own NAMED holiday so everyone knows where you're coming from. You have not repudiated my question, nor have you answered it.

Delphi you'd be amazed how many non religous people, such as myself, do know about the origins of Christmas but respect the way things are today. This isn't 300 B.C.

Zardoz on another question you quoted Julius Cesear and then added the number 1601. What is that all about? Or were you trying to give credit to William Shakespeare who wrote the line?

It's amazing how many people don't know this season was originally the celebration on Yule and had nothing to do with Christianity. History is lost to the ages, I guess.

Fortunately you have freedom of religion in the United States. In some countries they would just execute you for being different.

Fine with me. But you had better watch out for the ACLU. They don't like religious displays on public property. OPPS I forgot Druids aren't Christians and ACLU stands for Anti Christian Liberals Union. *LOL*

With that winter celebration will you have nude dancing? I know your summer one does. I really enjoyed the last one I attended.
