Funny book? Chicken Poop For The Soul...It'll make you laugh...maybe.
Or The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore...you'll laugh so hard you'll poop your pants.

Serious Book? Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali...It'll make you want to cry. Made me so angry I punched a whole in the wall.

since you didn't specify what you like I'll suggest my favorites right now:

Jane Austin- Pride and Prejudice- a classic, everyone should read.
Michael Chabon- the Amazing adventures of Cavlier and Clay- this is by the screen writer of spiderman 2. he's an amazing writer, very clever guy. this book is set in the 1930s to start and the novel takes place in the context of the wwII and the rise of popular comics.
Richard Adams- watership down- a book about the epic journey of rabbits- I know sounds weird, but is really thrilling. I've read this one 5 times.
Neil Stephenson- Snow Crash- a scifi anti utopian novel where capitalism has taken over all aspects of the US. also about a new kind of internet drug... a bit techy but I still really like this one.
Christopher Moore- the stupidest angel: a story of christmas
terror- a hysterical novel about an angel who comes to earth to grant one christmas miracle.... and gets it ALL WRONG. this is pretty short and laugh out loud funny. other main characters: the towns one hippie police officer, a helicopter pilot with a talking fruit bat, and the warrior babe of the outland. trust me, if you are sick of those x-mas tunes in the malls already, you will love this book!

hope you like one of them!

The Singer's Crown by Elaine Isaak. Wow. Her writing style is a little abrupt, but she also doesn't bog the reader down with detail, either. It's an old plot with a definately new twist.
