I purchased a television for my brother's dorm room and was asked for my receipt before leaving Wal-mart. Was I offended? No, but I wonder how others feel about this "lack of trust"among retail stores...

That lack of trust helps keep the cost down. I've been asked at Wal-mart to show a receipt for small purchases in a Wal-mart bag.

I hold up the reciept as I walk by but I don't stop and won't. If they want to know if I bought it why don't they check their own cameras. They are not allowed to ask you for your reciept. The only time they are allowed by law to check yor items and reciept is at sam's club which you sign a membership saying they can and if a clerk actually sees you take something you didn't buy.
