Sine 36 = Opp. Side / Hyp.
Sine 36 = 5 / Hyp.
Hyp. = 5 / Sine 36
Hyp. = 5 / 0.587785252
Hyp. = 8.506508084 or 8.51

SOH CAH TOA doesn't work on angles. It is used when you know the lengths of at least two sides. Then, you use the Pathagorean Theorem to find the third side.

From your story:-
sin 36° = 5 / h
h sin 36° = 5
h = 5 / sin 36°
h = 8.51

using the numbers you give

.5877=5/hyp

multiply through by hype to get
hyp*.5877=5 and solve

hyp = 5/.5877=8.5
