I might like to know how down is my down, that after I have found out that there is downside in me previously unknown. I would like to explore it; think about it; try to feel it what it is and what it is trying to say; I might like to sit quietly to think and feel what I am feeling, with all the courage and good thoughts. But it is more preferable for me to pray. I would pray to God almighty, the creator of my being. I understand that the soothing effects of a prayer are not merely for our sensual appeasement and solace. They are there for a better purpose: to be free from echoes of our thoughts and recent actions ringing in out ears, turning us deaf and almost blind, to enable us to gather our thoughts and feel entirely of our being.
It is very western tendency to try to combat what could be merely symptomatic. For the purpose of a fast paces lifestyle try to alleviate pain or depression. Whereas the fact is that both up and down are states associated with only partially opened mind. When we end up somehow with a mind shut to certain things in life, we are more likely to feel this way or that way. We are likely to think in relativistic and superficial terms about all things in our life. It is like jumping off an airplane with a parachute only half open, or half shut if you like. But when we engage ourselves in activities that remedy that effect, we not only feel better, but we also rediscover that we could think better.

I think about all the good, positive things in my life, ie, my parents are both still alive, I'm pretty healthy, I have a job, I have a home, I have a car etc, then I have my fave drink and give myself some time out doing what I want to do.
It may sound stupid but it works for me and before I even get halfway through my mental list of good things, I feel happier. Try it ~ I may just be a little nutty (I'm often told this, haha) but it works better than anything else I've ever tried.

I also put my headphones on and listen to some good music. Try not to hide from your problems though... face the problem head-on deal with it then or come up with a plan of action.
If it's a person look them in the eye and breathe deep, feel everything!
Don't be down for too long, your friends and family need you.

remember that its a feeling that WILL pass - do something to take your attention off the problem for a while but soon we all have to solve our problems and get to the root of it instead of brushing it under the carpet! Don't feel down for too long - you can get through it... we can't be happy all the time!

Try smiling, if it doesn't work, find something to do that will take your attention away from whatever it is that makes you feel down

If this is a short term thing, get yourself a diversion. Any type. You may know best what you like to do - movie, walk, sleep, read, etc.
If it is long term, try to understand and analyse what it is that makes you go down and try to fight that!!
I know its easier said than done, but better to try than to dwell on it.
