That means they had a really good DEEP sleep. Babies can sleep through anything. They're not referring to how long they slept, it's about how well they slept.

I am guessing that it is not referring to the length of uninterrupted sleep, but more of the peaceful slumber that babies seem to have. They don't have the stresses of adults, the worries, the pain of emotion... they are innocent and at peace. That's at least what I think... but I could be wrong! Maybe when that saying became known, people were drugging their babies and they slept for hours! Who knows! :)

Have you ever seen a little baby in a noisy crowded area sleeping peacefully? They are able to sleep through so much noise and not be bothered at all. Wish I could do that.

because while they are asleep, they are completely relaxed and deeply asleep.
