I am 26 y.o, I manage a convenience store.I only make 34000 a year and in february I will have 2 bachelor's degrees ( 1 in criminal Justice, which I have already finished and another in accounting and financing which I finish in February). I speak 3 languages fluently (Portuguese, Spanish and English) . I recently joined the US NAVY, but I cannot be an officer because I am only a permanent resident (not a citizen yet). And to make matters more difficult I cannot do any of the jobs I wanted to in there (MA, SEAL, diver and some others), because they require US citizenship, so I joined as an Electrician's Mate( I will volunteer for war). I have made my peace with my job in there, for the reason I joined was to repay to this country what it has given to me so far, which in my opinion it will last the next 25 years, which is how long, i plan on serving. I just wish I could overcome my feelings of being worthless, for being 26 years old, not making a lot of money like others my age are.

Hi, Hello!

Why are you making money the measure of your worth? Are you saying that everybody your age who makes less than 34K is worthless? Because you would have to include most teachers, college lecturers, dog trainers, and anyone legitimately on disability. At least! Are they worthless, too?

I think that what is causing your feelings is not so much your salary as it is your not doing more with what you have. I read more frustration in your voice than worthlessness. But you don't have to feel frustrated. In spite of your not being a citizen, there is a lot that you can do now with all that you have. You can tutor others in languages. You can volunteer with literacy programs. You can do something with your degrees. I would feel extremely frustrated if I had spent that much time and effort getting a degree...only not to use it.

Use what you have to make the world a better place--even if only in a small way--and you will start to feel better about yourself.

Not everyone your age makes more money than you. In fact if you look at statistics you make as much or more than over 60 percent of the population in this country. I think you are doing great.

There are millions of people who have not accomplished what you have at 26. You sound like a winner to me.

Why not put off joining until you get your citizenship, go in as an officer, and do what you really want to do?
