gift cards......
do you think gift cards are a less personal christmas gift?
is it just the easy way out?

Yes. To me a gift card says: you're important enough for me to buy you something, but not important enough for me to actually go out and spend time trying to decide what to get you. Of course if someone gives me a gift card and a gift, it says to me you're very important to me, but you're too complicated for me to actually decide what to get you.

It could actually be more personal to get/give a gift card.

It could say that you know that person well enough that they may not like anything you pick or that you know that they need so many things that your giving them the choice on how they want to spend the money.

It can still be personal if you present it in that light. On the other hand, just buying any gift because it seems "more personal" is not personal at all. It says that you really don't care what they want or need, and that it is more important to you to make an impression about yourself.

Although, ANY gift should be appreciated as money, time and thought goes into all of them on some level. And, if you get something you don't like, then you can always exchange it. Hope that helps.

I personally like gift cards, as long as it's to a store or restaurant I like. Sure beats getting a gift I'll never use; at least with the gift card you can pick out something you want or need!

No, because when you give someone a gift card then that means that they can get what ever THEY want. It is easier, but most people would rather get a gift card for any gift giving holiday. Reason being is because then they can get what they want, they don't have to worry about hurting someone if they don't like the gift, and they don't have to worry about returning hassles. And you... well you don't have to worry about if you got a good-enough gift or not.

Easy way out. Not personal at all. Everyone likes opening a gift, they may not always like what's in it but at least the person took the time to think about them and wrap it up!!! Just attach a gift receipt to the gift, that way they can exchange it if they don't like it.

Actually I prefer giftcards and so do most of the people in my family. It is easier for me to go pick something out (especially when the gift card is from my grandparents that have 10 grandkids and 3 great grandkids) because I can be hard to shop for sometimes! I love gift cards...we actually ALL give gift cards on my moms side of the family.

I think its a great idea if you get it for a specific store, it shows you've paid attention to what kinds of stores that person likes. Also, 90% of the time, people don't like the actual gifts their given anyways. Gift cards and money is the way to go!

Hell no. So long as they are stores I shop at I would LOVE gift cards above all else unless you're absolutly 100% certain I'll like an actual gift.

Every year I request just straight up cash for a gift. People rarely cooperate.

TOTALLY an easy way out.
the only time you should give one is if you are a grandparent buying a gift for a teenaged grandchild.
in this situation, gift cards are COMPLETELY acceptable.

I personally like a gift card because you can buy what you like
in the sales after Christmas and often get double the value of the card if you shop well
