For many visual references, I keep a "morgue" of photographic images that include, probably, thousands of subjects, from animals, costumes, uniforms, vehicles, plants, poses, etc. I find these extremely valuable when I can't go out to find actual live subjects when I need them.
Part of this morgue includes a dozen, or so childten's picture books. These are full of photos of cats, dogs, wild and domestic animals, cars, trucks and many other themes. I find many of these books on the shelves of second hand stores.

One of the best on color is by Nita Leland. You can find it at Northlight books, Amazon Books and nitaleland.com
The way to mix color is the first step in painting. My answers would depend on which media you are using or if you are interested in art history vs. painting. Your question could be more specific.
