By 1300 the civilization of Europe had appeared to have settled into stable patterns. Those seeking new answers in Europe tended to look for guidance in the "better" past, and sought to revive long-lost values, these efforts and the times in which these people lived, is called the age of rebirth or Renaissance.

All I can add to Morgaine's answer is that it started in Italy and gradually spread north, like the recedingof the polar ice cap! Thus Petrarch and Boccaccio, who died in 1374 and 1375, respectively, are considered Renaissance writers, while Chaucer, who was a generation younger, is still considered medieval.

It started with a fella named Giotto in Florence, Italy. 1303 is around the time he really started breaking with the byzantium style. And he was the first one to really do it.
The renaissance really got into swing in the 1500s though. You know, Da Vinci and all that.
