It depends on the first impressions! For example, I went to a concert with my friend, and my friend's friend. When I tripped over a step on the escalator and shouted "SUGARPLUM FAIRIES", the friend of a friend said "Haha, are you sure you're not gay?!"! I find though that generally, people just assume that I'm straight :-)

Everyone has little pigeon holes in their brains where they place information (whether it is correct or not) and most people place most other people into the heterosexual bracket.
If you are a female and come over as butch or a male showing their feminine side then they are pigeon holed Gay, again right or not.
However you are Gay and there is no reason not to disclose this or allow others to assume this. You sound a nice person and should not have to talk about things in which you have no interest just to put people off the scent. Be proud – you are gay.
If you are a good/nice person then that’s all you have to concern yourself about.
By the way, in answer to your question, I am straight but have many gay friends.
Good luck

Why would you hide the fact you are gay? Do you think people won't like you? People often assume I'm straight, but that's mostly because I'm a rugby player, but if anyone asks me I don't hide the fact I'm gay. You must give off a vibe. Maybe it's what you wear, or the way you speak, or whatever. But the simple fact is, you are gay and there is absolutely no point in hiding it. Because my best guess is that you aren't fooling anybody.

People assume I am straight, because I do not fit any immediate Gay 'stereotypes' Not that I particularly try and hide my sexuality, just that people do make assumptions about alot of things - not just sexual orientation. There was one guy who I had known as a work colleague for a while, who proceeded to tell me about how beat up a guy he believed to be gay. The way he was talking to me it was as if he expected my approval for what he had done. As I tried explaining to him, it wasn't just about me being a Gay man that made it offensive and actually quite scary, but the fact he could so callously talk about committing such an extreme and violent act. However it made me feel ashamed of myself, because I thought I must have been giving off 'vibes' to this guy that I was the kind of person who would condone that sort of behaviour!

Well I think most people assume I'm straight by default because that's what's common in the world.

I don't hide the fact that I'm gay though... and I certainly wouldn't ever "pretend" to be straight, even as a joke. I had to do enough of that in high school...

There are people who nonetheless don't think in bisexuality, and intensely few people interior the foremost crowd understand something approximately asexuals. Our subculture is fairly black and white whilst it is composed of gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation. there's no longer often any room for people who're stranded exterior those little boxes of on the instant/gay, masculine/female, male/woman. Are you asexual too? Your avatar has our hues. @Cassie: Whoa. Shared recommendations? XD

People tend to assume your orientation based on the gender of your partner. Otherwise, they base it upon what the know of your situation. For gay or straight people, its not a problem. A person who self-identifies as bisexual tends to feel invisible when they are assumed to be gay (if they have a same sex partner) or straight (if they have an opposite sex partner) or (gay and lying) when a gay person knows they identify as bisexual.

I did not meet you in person but I thought you were straight. I know some gay men who cut my hair and they are nice. We don't believe the same things about morals but they are talented for cutting hair and I like them. I don't like to constantly disagree with anyone because it is not healthy for them or me so we don't go there. Does a rainbow background mean your gay on here?

I love playing with people's minds! Most lesbians read me as gay. i'm married to a trans guy so i talk about my husband so a lot of people think i'm straight, until i tell them that he was in girls scouts as a kid and used to be a lesbian in college. Then they are really confused. He identifies as a straight male, and I identify as a bi female.
