Excellent question! I think there are a number of factors involved. First of all, most of the people who run for public office are already members of the "ruling elite", and the candidates who aren't members usually can't afford the big PR agents that the ones who are can. And since people are so easily influenced by the images they see in the media, they'll vote for the candidates with the best PR.

Because they "REGISTER TO VOTE" their votes and thus "GIVE" their votes to the state corporation that was set up by the ruling elites for their benefit of steering the common man/woman into a condition of voluntary servitude. The election choices presented by all forms of media also may ensure a preselected winner. Both sides of the two party system are controlled, so who "WINS" is of little consequence. By thus registering to vote, you agree to the outcome of the vote. A registered vote can be "COUNTED" anyway needed, you really have NO WAY to recount the electronically tabulated voting machines. Jurisdiction is a key component to this dilemma. Voting as a REGISTERED VOTER is a CONTRACT.

Well, I am not a wealthy man by any stretch of the imagination, but I vote consistently in favor of whatever candidate I perceive as being most sympathetic to property interests, more often than not Republicans, sometimes Libertarians.
Why you ask?
Well, I believe that at the end of the day all rights must rest on the foundation of the sanctity of property. If they can tax your church, you have no freedom of religion. If they can take your podium, you have no freedom of speech. If they can seize the fruits of your labors and redistribute them for their own purposes, well, you have no freedom at all. Then everything is just the government's for the asking.
The ruling elite, as you call them, certainly have much bigger stakes in this game than I have to protect, and maybe if we used the weight of the government to parcel out their holdings I would benefit financially for the short run. But it sets a precedent in which I am the eventual target of redistribution policies whenever there is a mass within the electorate which perceives itself as worse off than me.
If you do not work to preserve the sanctity of property rights at all levels, you sacrifice any guarantee of your own small piece of the pie, and all of your other codependent rights along with it.

I thought that there were no "common" people. Now, if you mean why does the average person volte for the ruling elite then you have a valid point. They have few choices. And, I do not think that all who serve in politics are ruling, nor elite.

The common man lacks the financial backing to sucessfully run, so we keep voting for the same types of candidates who can afford the election run.

Too many people do not actually vote, they just play "Guess the Winner". Rather then study the issues, they let the candidate's ad budget and the media decide who they will vote for.

People who do that do so because they are foolled into believing their opression is really freedom. Rezmeber the slogan "slavery is freedom"? The elite doesn't say it that open but they do try to convice ordinairy people day in day out that their opression is part of freedom and doing anything to fix it would somehow make them less free. Look at how they corrupt and poison the healthcare debate

I vote for them because they are the only ones who can afford to run and therefore they are the ones who do run. I feel it's my civic duty to vote.

Because the Republicans whistle up a new demon each election cycle. It may be Willy Horton or Osama Bin Laden but the tactic is always the same. Just vilify the opposition and get people to vote against themselves. It seems to work.

I agree with Zardoz. It is a fascist tactic used to keep the sheep voting for them.
